I was in the library only moments after leaving Cadeâs room, wearing another light blue cotton dress with a gorgeous sweetheart neckline and puffed short sleeves. It ballooned out at my waist and it felt like I was wearing air around my legs. My long hair was piled in a messy bun at the top of my head, fastened with a modest gold tiara. I felt radiant as I sauntered into the grand doors of the library.
As I opened my mouth to greet Grace, who was, again, on a ladder way too high, I stopped and glanced down at one of the tables. A mixture of flame and fury rushed through my veins as I took small, tentative steps toward the table.
A bright-red rose with thorns sat atop it.
I carefully picked it up by the stem and studied it â like itâd give me an answer of where it came from and what it was doing in my library. âGrace, darling,â I called out, my eyes never leaving the rose in my hand.
Graceâs head turned at the sound of my voice. She beamed. âGood morning, Queen Raven! Your pile of books is on the table there,â she responded, pointing toward a table at the opposite end of the room.
âGrace, did you bring this?â I cocked my head at the rose.
âNo, Your Majesty, I didnât see it when I came in.â
I placed the rose in my palm and set it ablaze. Where the fuck were these coming from?
Graceâs eyes drew open, her jaw falling slack. âNot a fan of roses?â
I watched the flower wilt into ashes in my hand. âNo, darling. Not a fan of men who give them to me.â I wiped my hands together to dispose of the ashes on the floor.
âCan I⦠see that again?â
My eyes lifted to hers, a grin replacing my previously irritated frown. I nodded and grabbed a piece of paper off the top of a pile on a table in front of me and lit it up in my fingers. I held it out to Grace as she descended down the ladder and watched in amusement at the look on her face as the paper burned.
As flames continued to encase the paper, I released watery frost from my fingertips, the fire sparking in a beautiful purple as it mixed with the cold. Grace continued to watch, perplexed and amazed.
Once the fire was put out by the icy water, I gathered air from the room and used it to spin the paper around us, the charred piece dancing in circles around our bodies. We both laughed until the paper landed back on the table, its corners black and wrinkled from the flames.
âThat was incredible!â Grace squealed, her eyes still on the piece of scorched paper.
âThatâs not even the full scale of them,â I explained. âI can shift into each one, fully becoming the element.â
Grace clapped her hands together and fixated her gaze back on me. âCan I see?â
I giggled and shook my head. âNot today. Iâm still trying to learn how to control one of them.
